Program

Aquatics

The Newark YMCA offers swim lessons for people ages 6 months to adult.  We follow YMCA of the USA standard for teaching and all classes incorporate their five components: Personal Safety, Personal Growth, Water Sport & Games, Stroke Development, and Rescue. All classes are 40 minutes long unless otherwise noted. Session prices are based on eight (8) classes and range from $80 to $100 per session. We offer our program at 600 Broad Street in Newark and at the Lincoln School Pool in Kearny.  If you have any questions or concerns  please contact:

Registration Policies:


  • Classes may be cancelled up to 7 days prior to the first day of the session. Pre-registration is necessary.
  •  Each session includes two lessons per week for four weeks or one lesson per week for eight weeks.
  • Registration:  You must register in person. Payment by check, MASTERCARD, VISA, American Express are accepted. Program fees are NON-REFUNDABLE.
  • In case of insufficient enrollment, The Newark YMCA reserves the right to cancel or combine classes.
  • Classes cancelled by the YMCA will be scheduled for a make-up. No make-up classes are available due to participant circumstances or acts of God. 
  • YMCA programs are designed to benefit persons of all backgrounds, and fees are based on the cost of providing each program. The YMCA will assist any individual or family who wants to participate but cannot afford the fee, as long as funds are available.

Newark YMCA Storm

Youth Swim Team for boys and girls, ages six through fourteen.

1. Skippers (Ski and Perch) 6 Months - 36 Months

This course provides a positive aquatic experience for parent and child. Participants learn basic skills through group instruction utilizing games, songs and other fun activities.

2. Preschool 3 - 5 Years

 

Ray - Preschool Intermediate

Intermediate (ages 3-5)

Pike (beginner, ages 3-5)

Pike (beginner, ages 3-5)

Children learn basic paddle stroke, kicking skills, safety, and flotation.

Eel (advanced beginner, ages 3-5)

Eel (advanced beginner, ages 3-5)

Children build on their Pike skills and begin to swim independently approximately five yards and float on their back.

3. Progressive Youth Lessons 6 - 13 Years

Polliwog(beginner, ages 6 -12)

Polliwog(beginner, ages 6 -12)

This course is designed for children with little or no swimming skills. Children will learn to perform paddle stroke on front/side/back for 25 yards with flotation device and 15 yards independently. Personal safety and rescue is introduced.

Polliwog Advanced(adv. beginner, ages 6-13)

Polliwog Advanced(adv. beginner, ages 6-13)

Will learn to swim 25 yards Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Sidestroke independently. Rotary breathing, diving, float for one minute, and safety are taught.

Guppy (intermediate ages 6-13)

Guppy (intermediate ages 6-13)

Students will work on their endurance for Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke. Children will be able to swim 50 yards continuously and tread water for one minute. Butterfly is introduced at this level.

Minnow (advanced, ages 6-12)

Minnow (advanced, ages 6-12)

Will swim 100 yards continuously using all strokes with proper technique, breathing, and turns.

4. Teens and Adults 14+ Years

 

Teen/Adult Beginner

For teens and adults, who have little or no swim experience seeking to learn fundamentals of swimming.

 

Adult Intermediate

For adults and teens 13+, who can submerge, swim 25 yards, and are comfortable in the water. Adults should leave with knowledge on performing Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke.
