Longtime Y member and Board of Trustees volunteer overcomes devastating injury and to return to life of successful competition. At the Y, Ed worked out daily to regain strength and health.
How would you feel if the life you knew as a competitive athlete was taken away from you in an instant? If your surgeon told you that you would walk again, but never run?
Meet Ed Wright. An executive at City National Bank in Newark, NJ, and an active member of the Newark YMCA for 15 years and a Board Member of the organization for five. Ed has been a competitive athlete since 1983, completing more than 300 triathlons, 300 duathlons (run, bike, run) and has been a member of TEAM USA Duathlon Team.
During a fateful evening bike ride in December of 2009, Ed slid on a patch of black ice. The bike went out from under him, and he shattered his left hip when he landed. During a six hour operation, the surgeon painstakingly rebuilt his hip. At this point, the accomplished athlete knew he needed to learn how to walk, before he could challenge the doctor’s prognosis that he would never run again.
Ed used the facilities of the Newark Y exclusively for his rehabilitation. The pool provided the best therapy for his hip flexor and related muscles; the stationery bikes helped him regain his lost fitness levels, and eventually strength training was incorporated into his routine to rebuild his muscles after months of inactivity. He was encouraged by the positive support of other Y members and staff who told him what an inspiration he was, especially while he worked out on crutches. Ed's resolve, and support from his Y family, helped him fully recover. Ten months after his injury, and three months after relearning how to walk, Ed was competing once again, undefeated weekend after weekend.
Ed has found his experience with the Newark YMCA to be inspirational on many levels. He cites the positive impact the Y has on the lives of members, and the health benefits derived by many, as two of the reasons he joined the Board. Ed recently competed as member of the triathlon Team USA in the World Championships in Beijing, China; and continues to be an inspiration to us all.
