Swim Team Excels at the Newark Y

YMCA Storm Swimmers Soar

When nine year old Mario Iturria enrolled in our Polliwog beginner swimming lessons in Feb of 2011, he was simply hoping to learn to swim. One year later, Mario was competing on the Newark Y’s new Storm Swim Team in the YMCA State Finals for five events: 200, 100 and 50 yard freestyle, and 100 and 50 yard butterfly. According to Mario’s coaches, his hard work and great practice attitude resulted in this amazing accomplishment. Congratulations to Mario and all the members of the swim team on a successful year!

The Newark Y Aquatics program grew by leaps and bounds this year, including the exciting addition of our swim team, YMCA Storm. Last year, more than 1,000 children took part in swimming lessons and 33 participated in our first year of competition in the YMCA coed swim league. Of these, three reached the level of silver qualifier, one for multiple events.

Daniel Howard joined the team in October and swam his way to great performances and a confident attitude. Daniel’s aunt, Denise Wilkinson, attributes his improved grades with his involvement in the swimming program at the Y. Ms. Wilkinson said family involvement in the program makes a big difference for the swimmers. The Newark Y Aquatics program is very family friendly: in addition to swimming lessons and competitive swimming, ten Family Float nights (Friday night movies at the pool) were held during this year, with 500 children and adults participating.
