4-H At The Y's Choice After School Program

Who would have thought that an after school program could be so much fun? The fourth, fifth, and sixth-graders at the Y’s Choice After School Program would!! Not only do these children complete their homework with assistance from counselors and take part in a variety of physical activities to promote healthy habits; they participate in science activities sponsored by the Rutgers University 4-H Science Ambassadors. A group of high school students accompany the program coordinator, Marissa Blodnik, to engage the children in fun, interactive, hands-on science activities connected to real world scenarios.

The children in the Y’s Choice program have experimented with temperature, learned about climate changes, studied the effects of carbon dioxide, and made ooblek (a gooey green substance with the properties of both a liquid and a solid) using familiar household materials such as milk and vinegar. Their latest science activity took place at Belleville High School in Bakka Court, the school garden. Here, the children discussed causes and solutions to the problems of pollution. Then they got down and dirty digging holes to plant flowers for a butterfly garden and planted their own herbs to take home.

All in all, this was an unforgettable experience for all of the participants. At the Y’s Choice Program, children learn while they have fun – all in a safe environment! They put on their scientist caps and embark on exciting educational science journeys. What a wonderful way to expand a child’s mind and instill knowledge through play. The 4-H Science Ambassadors have created a long-lasting and meaningful experience for our children!
