For more than sixty years, Mr. Faiella was an integral part of our Y family. Up until the age of 88, Mr. Faiella could regularly be found in the gym shooting jump shots or hitting the punching bag in the weight room. When he’d get into a shooting contest or pick-up game, a crowd would gather to cheer him on. And every Christmas, he was like one of Santa’s elves, giving all he encountered a new pair of socks.  Ten years ago, Mr. Faiella was the first person to receive a Newark YMCA lifetime membership, in recognition of his more than 50 consecutive years as a member of the Newark Y.

Mr. Faiella’s life was one of courage, service and family. Born in Newark, the retired steel worker served as a combat medic in World War II, earning three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.  He was involved in the glider and paratrooper division of the 11th Airborne, on high risk and challenging assignments. After Mr. Faiella’s retirement from the steel industry, he spent his leisure time in his garden, on trips to Atlantic City, and collecting American coins. Spending time with family, especially during the holidays, was essential for him.

During the past couple of years, Mr. Faiella’s ill health kept him from working out at the Y – though family members say he vowed to return. And even in the nursing home where he spent his final months, Mr. Faiella was committed to his daily fitness routine in the physical therapy room.

Mike Faiella’s family has asked us to set up a Memorial Fund in his name, to continue his legacy of giving. For more information, contact Elizabeth Lorenzo, at 973/624-8900, ext. 6827 or elorenzo@newarkymca.org.

Families Get a Jump on Summer!
Healthy Kids Day brought fun and fitness to 450 kids of all ages: children climbed our inflatable rock wall, jumped in the pool, or joined a Zumba class. Adults had tons of fun, too! Spin classes, a dunk tank and prizes topped the list. Congressman Donald Payne Jr. and City Council Members Darrin Sharif and Anibal Ramos Jr. were on board to show support for Youth Development and Healthy Living.
