GENERAL INFORMATION

The Newark YMCA offers swim lessons for people ages 6 months- Adult.  We follow YMCA of the USA standard for teaching and all classes incorporate the five components of Personal Safety, Personal Growth, Water Sport & Games, Stroke Development, and Rescue.  All classes are 40 minutes long unless otherwise noted.  Session prices are based on seven (7) classes.  Session prices are $65 for members and $75 for Non-Member.  We offer our program at the Newark YMCA at 600 Broad Street and at Lincoln School in Kearny (121 Beech Street).

Registration Policies

  • Classes may be cancelled up to 7 days prior to first day of session.  Pre-registration is necessary in order to schedule instructors.
  • Program fees are NON-REFUNDABLE. 
  • In case of insufficient enrollments, The Newark YMCA reserves the right to cancel or combine classes.

Make-up Classes

Classes cancelled by the YMCA will be scheduled for a make-up. No make-up classes are available due to participant circumstances or acts of God.

Financial Assistance Policy

YMCA programs are designed to benefit persons of all backgrounds, and fees are based on the cost of providing each program.  The YMCA will assist any individual or family who wants to participate but cannot afford the fee, as long as funds are available.

 

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

PARENT/CHILD—6-35 months

Children 6 to 35 mos. and parents. This class  provides a positive aquatic experience while bonding with children. Participants learn basic skills and have fun singing songs and  playing with toys and flotation devices. 

PIKE:

D
esigned for new swimmers.  Kids learn basic paddle stroke and kicking skills, safety, flotation and bubbles.

TO PASS: must swim Paddle stroke on front/side/and back 5 ft w/o instructional flotation device & 10 yds w/ float.

Advanced beginner. Must complete PIKE or swim equivalent to enter.

TO PASS: must swim Paddle stroke on front/side/and back 15-20 yards with IFD and 15 ft without IFD (instructional flotation device). 

RAY:

INTERMEDIATE. Must complete EEL or swim equivalent to enter. Intro to rudimentary breathing, plus elementary backstroke.

TO PASS:   must swim all strokes 25yds w/ IFD and 20 ft w/o IFD (instructional flotation device).

 

YOUTH LESSONS 6-13 YEARS

BEGINNER, for those with little or no swimming skills.

TO PASS: must perform Paddle stroke on front/side/back for 25 yds w/IFD and 15 ft without instructional floats. Personal safety and rescue is introduced.

GUPPY

Must complete Polliwog or swim equivalent.

TO PASS:  must swim 25 yards freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and sidestroke w/o instructional floatation device. Rotary breathing, diving, float for 1 minute, and safety is taught.

MINNOW

Must complete Guppy or swim equivalent.

TO PASS:
 must swim all strokes 50 yards w/o instructional floatation device, and tread water 1 min. using scissors kick. Butterfly is introduced at this level.

FISH

Must pass Minnow or swim equivalent to qualify.

TO PASS:  must swim 100 yards continuously using proper breathing and turns. Swim 50 yards butterfly with fins and 25 yards without fins.

ORCA (KEARNY ONLY)

These organized workouts are for kids who have passed the MINNOW level and want to continue to swim.  Participants will be led through a workout with drills for stroke refinement, and distance swimming to build endurance. All competitive strokes will be worked on and introduced.

Teens & Adults 13+ years

Adult Beginner 1

For those who have no swim experience.  This class will work on floating, gliding, kicking, breath control and swimming.

Adult Beginner 2

For those who can submerge, kick 5 yards & are comfortable in the water.  Class will continue to build endurance kicking & swimming.

Adult Intermediate

For adults that can swim 25 yards on their front.  This class will work on refining front and back crawl, breathing, and introduce breast stroke.

Adult Stroke Clinic (ASC)

For adults that can swim 100 yards on front and back.  Class will work on increasing endurance while refining Front crawl, Backstroke and

Breaststroke.  Butterfly will be introduced.
