Twelfth Annual Sports Legends Program
The YMCA's Eleventh Annual Sports
Legends Program was a booming success with 60 retired
athletes visiting 35 schools and 3 Hospitals in
Newark and surrounding communities, counseling and
encouraging over 2,000 students and sick children.
These athletes delivered motivational presentations
and encouraged students to stay in school, stay
away from drugs and violence and to believe in their
own ability to set and achieve goals. Students also
got an opportunity to "compete" with the
athletes in racquetball and basketball competitions.
These competitions helped to strengthen the students'
belief in themselves while having fun. The two days
of community outreach culminated in the Sports Legends
Gala where corporate and community supporters met
the legendary athletes who helped to shape sports
history.
