WE’RE ALWAYS HERE FOR OUR COMMUNITY
Emergency Housing/Shelter Services at the Newark Y
How to secure Emergency Housing / Shelter at the Newark Y:
To enroll in our Emergency Homeless Shelter Program you will need to determine how your housing will be paid for. You may pay yourself ($ 53 per night per person) or secure a voucher from an agency that will pay on your behalf.
You may obtain a voucher from one of the following sources:
- Your current city's social services agency/department. You may find your city’s social service agency/depart by calling the City Hall/Government ;
- NJ Department of Community Affairs (DCCP) Shelter Support & Emergency Housing Grants (609)-292-4080;
- The local County Social Service Agency is the primary resource for individuals experiencing homelessness or those seeking emergency housing assistance. During business hours, individuals are directed to contact their local County Social Service Agency. You can find your County’s Social Service Agency via https://www.nj.gov/humanservices/dfd/counties/ Mondays - Fridays 9 am - 5 pm.
- After business hours, on weekends, and on holidays, individuals are directed to contact NJ 211 by dialing 2-1-1. On behalf of the county, NJ 211 arranges a one-time emergency placement through the statewide homeless hotline program for those who are eligible, along with information and appropriate referrals for the individual's situation.
Once you have obtained your Voucher from any of the above sources, you may come into the YMCA @ 600 Broad Street Newark NJ to arrange to move in (Intake) or call to make an appointment to do so 973-624-8900 x 6823.
