Supportive Housing
BUILDING COMMUNITY
SUPPORTIVE HOUSING
The YMCA Supportive Housing was created to address the growing and existing gaps in the current Essex County Continuum of Care, which is a lack of affordable permanent housing. The Y adopted the Supportive Housing initiative, which is to provide supportive services such as case management, advocacy, and socio-economical services that are linked to permanent housing units/vouchers. In 2007, the Y started its first Supportive Housing Program titled Fresh Start that provided individuals/families who were chronically homeless and disabled with HUD vouchers administered through the Collaborative Support Programs of New Jersey (CSP). Or just homeless. Since that time the program has expanded with The Newark Housing Authority and has added on 7 additional programs, with over 174 voucher recipients and looks forward to further expansion. The Newark YMCA is focused on making the housing puzzle pieces come together.
The YMCA has multiple Supportive Housing programs and some criteria for specific vouchers may differ. However, some of the main criteria is listed below:
- Must be currently homeless (chronically homeless, as defined by HUD may be applicable)
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must be disabled, either physically and/or mentally (may be applicable)
- Must be a resident of New Jersey (in some cases may need to be a resident of Essex County or Newark for some vouchers)
Rapid Re- Housing for those that qualify.
- 1st month rent
- 1st month and a half Security Deposit
- Utility payments
