Supportive Housing

BUILDING COMMUNITY

The YMCA Supportive Housing initiative was created to address a critical gap in the Essex County Continuum of Care: the lack of affordable permanent housing. Through this initiative, the Y provides not only housing, but also essential supportive services such as case management, advocacy, and socio-economic resources to help individuals and families achieve long-term stability.

Fresh Start - Supportive Housing

In 2007, the Newark YMCA launched its first Supportive Housing program, Fresh Start, offering chronically homeless and individuals with disabilities access to permanent housing through Housing of Urban Development (HUD) vouchers administered by the Collaborative Support Programs of New Jersey (CSP). Since then, the program has grown in partnership with the Newark Housing Authority, expanding to include seven additional programs that support more than 174 voucher recipients.

Criteria for Housing

  • Currently experiencing homelessness (HUD’s definition of chronic homelessness may apply).
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Living with a physical and/or mental disability (when applicable).
  • Resident of New Jersey (in some cases, residency in Essex County or Newark may be required).

Note: Eligibility criteria may vary depending on the specific voucher program.
