Newark YMCA Reopening Postponed - More Details >>
President/CEO Michael J. Bright Update May 26, 2020
Dear YMCA Members and Friends,
The Newark YMCA remains closed to our members and program participants under State and City of Newark orders. We do not have any information as to when these orders will be lifted. Just like you, we will receive notification of when we may reopen via news media and public announcements.
While we have not been able to offer our member services, fitness, sports and in person youth development programs, our staff team has been hard at work planning for our reopening. With guidance from CDC, the Departments of Health and our own medical advisory task force, we have developed measures to ensure that we meet all social distancing and sanitation requirements.
We anticipate that the reopening of the Y will be a multi -phased approach. The first phase will include limiting fitness activities to individual ones only – no group exercise classes, no team sports, limited operating hours, limited numbers of people at a time, increased distance between equipment and adhering to social distancing standards. The locker rooms, steam rooms, and saunas will remain closed until later in the phased opening plan. Our staff will conduct frequent sanitation of equipment and facilities, with special attention to “high touch” surfaces. We will also be conducting a quick screening of everyone as they enter the building. Non-surgical masks and frequent handwashing or sanitizing will be required.
Once the State and City Governments allow, we plan to offer our Summer Day Camp program in adherence to the CDC guidance and Department of Health regulations. Our staff have been working to ensure that we do all we can to ensure every child’s safety and enjoyment of Day Camp this summer, assuming we are permitted to operate.
Our Housing and Shelter programs have remained in full operation and available. Please contact our Welcome Center at 973-624-8900 for information about these services.
As more information becomes available, we will continue to provide you with updates as to when and what we are offering at the Newark Y to promote our members and community’s healthy living, youth development and social responsibility.
