Newark YMCA Statement on the Mr. Tyre Nichols Killing

February 1, 2023

This past Friday, many of us watched the brutal and senseless beating that ended Mr. Tyre Nichols’ life. What we witnessed was cruel, unimaginable, and heart-wrenching.  I, for one, could not watch it all. Having three sons of my own as well as knowing and loving my nephews, friends’ sons, and even kids I coached, it was and is impossible for me not to visualize them on that ground being punched, being kicked, and screaming for their mother or me. Those images will forever be embedded in my mind and soul.

I share this as a point of reference for the welcoming environment to which the many staff and volunteers at the Newark YMCA and I are committed. We believe everyone deserves access to programs and services to help them feel and become healthier. We aim tirelessly to create a safe and comfortable environment for everyone to express themselves and live out their dreams. We are involved in the YMCA because we believe and know we make a difference.

We want the entire community to know: We are here for you. If you need a safe place to share your concerns or deepest thoughts, and a place to help you find your way - that place is the Newark YMCA.  Here at the Newark YMCA, there is no place for violence, prejudice, racism, or hate of any kind. Our doors are always open for anyone seeking a reprieve from negativity and hardship.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Mr. Nichols’ family and friends, in addition to all those impacted by senseless violence, the killings of citizens, and the disregard of humanity.

Hopefully yours,

 Michael C. Bright
