It is with deep respect and heartfelt reflection that the YMCA of Newark and Vicinity acknowledges the passing of The Honorable Sharpe James, former Mayor of the City of Newark and longtime YMCA member.
Mayor James was a towering figure in Newark’s modern history—an advocate, educator, veteran, and public servant whose leadership shaped the city’s political and civic landscape for over two decades. A son of Newark, he dedicated his life to public service, community advancement, and urban revitalization. His influence extended beyond city hall, touching lives through education, economic development, and empowerment efforts that elevated the voice and spirit of Newark’s neighborhoods.
